But they take fundamentally different approaches: Shopify is a hosted platform that handles everything; WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin that gives you full control. Here is how they compare.

Shopify

A hosted, all-in-one e-commerce platform. You pay a monthly subscription and Shopify handles hosting, security, payments, and infrastructure.

Best described as: The iPhone of e-commerce — polished, opinionated, works out of the box.

WooCommerce

A free, open-source WordPress plugin that turns any WordPress site into an online store. You handle hosting, security, and infrastructure yourself.

Best described as: The Android of e-commerce — flexible, customizable, requires more setup.

Costs are comparable at most revenue levels. The real cost difference is in developer time — WooCommerce requires more ongoing technical management.

Design and Customization

Shopify: 180+ official themes (free and paid). Themes are well-designed and mobile-responsive. Customization through theme editor is intuitive but limited to what the theme supports. Deep customization requires Liquid (Shopify's templating language).

WooCommerce: Thousands of WordPress themes. Unlimited design flexibility since it is WordPress. However, quality varies enormously. Many WooCommerce themes are bloated and slow.

Winner: Tie — Shopify for quality out of the box; WooCommerce for unlimited customization potential.

Performance

Shopify: Consistent performance backed by Shopify's CDN and hosting infrastructure. Average Lighthouse scores: 50-70. Not blazing fast but reliable.

WooCommerce: Highly variable. A well-optimized WooCommerce site with good hosting scores 60-80. A typical WooCommerce site with multiple plugins scores 30-50. Performance depends entirely on hosting quality, theme choice, and plugin optimization.

Winner: Shopify for reliable baseline performance. WooCommerce CAN be faster with significant optimization effort.

SEO

Shopify: Good built-in SEO. Auto-generated sitemaps, customizable meta titles and descriptions, clean URL structure. Limitations: URL structure includes "/collections/" and "/products/" prefixes that cannot be removed. Blog functionality is basic.

WooCommerce: Excellent SEO potential with Yoast SEO or Rank Math plugins. Full URL control. Powerful blogging (it is WordPress). Schema markup plugins available. Limitation: requires plugin setup and configuration.

Winner: WooCommerce for SEO flexibility. Shopify's SEO is good but has structural limitations.

Payment Processing

Shopify: Shopify Payments (powered by Stripe) is the primary option. Using third-party payment gateways incurs additional 0.5-2% fees on top of the gateway's own fees. Over 100 payment gateways supported.

WooCommerce: No preferred payment gateway. Stripe, PayPal, Square, and dozens of others integrate via plugins. No additional fees beyond the gateway's own charges. More payment flexibility for international stores.

Winner: WooCommerce for payment flexibility and no additional platform fees. Shopify Payments is excellent but the additional fees for third-party gateways are a limitation.

Apps and Extensions

Shopify App Store: 8,000+ apps. Well-curated, reviewed, and generally high quality. However, app costs add up quickly — $10-100/month per app.

WooCommerce Plugins: 50,000+ plugins (WordPress ecosystem). Many are free. Quality varies widely. Plugin conflicts are common. Security risks from poorly maintained plugins.

Winner: Shopify for quality and reliability. WooCommerce for quantity and cost.

Security

Shopify: PCI DSS Level 1 compliant. Security is handled entirely by Shopify. You do not think about SSL certificates, server patches, or DDoS protection.

WooCommerce: Security is your responsibility. You must maintain WordPress core updates, plugin updates, server security, SSL certificates, and PCI compliance for payment handling. WordPress is the most targeted CMS for attacks.

Winner: Shopify — significantly better security posture with zero effort from you.

Scalability

Shopify: Scales automatically. Whether you get 100 or 100,000 visitors, Shopify handles it. Shopify Plus handles enterprise volumes (e.g., Kylie Cosmetics flash sales).

WooCommerce: Scaling requires upgrading hosting, implementing caching, and potentially restructuring the site. Traffic spikes can take down a WooCommerce store without proper preparation.

Winner: Shopify — scales effortlessly.

Headless Commerce

Shopify: Storefront API enables headless commerce with custom frontends. Hydrogen framework for building headless storefronts. Strong ecosystem and documentation.
