Custom Shopify development and Shopify migrations.
Shopify works out of the box for standard ecommerce. When the store needs a custom theme, unusual checkout customization, or a migration to Shopify from another platform — Shopify development expertise matters.
Need Shopify development — custom theme, checkout customization, or migration to Shopify
Shopify development has a few distinct areas:
Theme development: Shopify themes use Liquid (templating language), JavaScript, and CSS. Custom themes require Liquid knowledge. Theme customization via the Shopify theme editor has limits; custom themes have full control.
Checkout extensibility:
Shopify Checkout Extensions (React components deployed to Shopify's checkout) allow custom UI elements in the checkout flow. This is the approved path; editing checkout.liquid is deprecated.
Shopify Functions: Server-side custom logic for discounts, shipping rates, and payment customization. Written in WebAssembly (compiled from Rust or JavaScript).
Storefront API + Headless: Shopify as a backend, custom frontend (Next.js/Hydrogen). Full design control, better performance, more development overhead. Good for brands where the frontend experience is differentiated.
When to leave Shopify: Shopify's checkout is the constraint. If the checkout experience needs to be fundamentally different from what Shopify allows — complex configuration, multi-step customization, B2B pricing — a custom build is the answer.
